More Details About The Shell Key Preserve / Sand Dollar Island

The tour typically begins with a visit to Shell Key Preserve, which is approximately a 30 to 45 minute boat ride away. During the journey, we will actively search the waters for various marine creatures, including the elusive Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, manatees, and other fascinating marine life.

During this tour, we have the option to make a stop at an island. We can choose to spend the entire time at Shell Key Preserve, or we can divide our time and also visit Sand Dollar Island, which is located across the pass. Shell Key Preserve is not only a bird sanctuary but is also owned by the state. It boasts breathtaking beaches and is home to a wide variety of stunning wildlife. And let’s not forget about the shelling – there are shells as far as the eye can see! Come and experience why this tour is our top recommendation.

Shell Key Preserve is a state park that is home to a bird sanctuary where you can see Osprey, Egrets, Pelicans, Cormorants and a wide variety of birds which makes this tour great for bird watchers and ornithologists alike. If you think that’s for the birds, don’t worry, it is also where sea turtles nest during the summer months. It’s important to understand that we will see them from a distance so as to to preserve the sea turtle habitat and nesting. This is what helps keep Florida’s marine life thriving and diverse. Shell Key Preserve has some great opportunities to find shells and sand dollars

You can choose to spend your entire tour on Shell Key Preserve, but if you’ve had your fill of Shell Key Preserve, we can travel to Sand Dollar Island which is about 15-30 minutes away on any given day.

Sand Dollar Island – Also know as Outback Key offers the best shelling opportunities in St. Petersburg, and probably the whole Tampa Bay. If you are looking for sand dollars, this is the place to find them. Aside from sand dollars, there is amazing crystal clear water and great beaches to lay out on. It makes perfect for playing beach games, snorkeling, or laying out on the beach. If you want, we can spend the entire tour here.
